Richard Carlbom

Richard Carlbom has more than a decade of experience being a political and community organizer, fundraiser and trusted advisor to political leaders at all levels of government. Most recently he served as the Campaign Manager of Minnesotans United for All Families, the official 'Vote No' campaign that helped Minnesota become the first state in the nation to defeat a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

The groundbreaking effort culminated in November 2012 with more than 40,000 individual volunteers, more than 80,000 individual donors contributing more than $13 million and a network of more than 700 coalition members representing all walks of life in Minnesota. The effort proved to be the largest grassroots campaign in the history of Minnesota.

Richard then led Minnesotans United to successfully secure the freedom to marry for all committed couples in Minnesota in 2013, making Minnesota the first state in the Midwest to secure marriage equality through the state legislature. This historic effort made Minnesota the twelfth state to secure the freedom to marry for same-sex couples and the first to do so just six months after defeating a hurtful and divisive ballot amendment.

Before joining Minnesotans United for All Families, Richard was Communications Director for Chris Coleman, the Mayor of Saint Paul. He also managed the successful 2010 re-election campaign of Representative Tim Walz. A 2004 graduate of Saint John’s University (Collegeville, MN), Carlbom was the youngest mayor elected in Minnesota at age 23 and served as the mayor of St. Joseph, Minnesota from 2005-2007.
